Input Unit

An input device provides an interface between the users and the machine such as keyboard and mouse which enable to control the functions of a computer. They provide a method to access files and folders and to modify data. These devices are used to enter data into the computer .The input/output devices provide the means of communication between the computer and the outer world. A wide variety of input/output devices are now available.

An input device accepts data from the outside world and translates them into a form the computer can interpret. The various types of input devices along with their typical application are described below

Keyboard:

It is one of the most common input devices. Keyboard is used to enter data into computer, which may be numeric or alphabetic form. Layout of keyboard is same as that of typewriter with some additional keys. Generally keyboards are of two sizes 84 keys or 101/102 keys but now 104 keys keyboard is also available for windows 95 etc. Main keyboard: Usual typing key A-Z, 0-9 etc Numeric board:     For numeric data or cursor movement Function keys:    Used to reduce typing efforts (F1 to F12)

Mouse:

The computer mouse was invented and developed by Douglas Engelbart, with the assistance of Bill English, during the 1960s and was patented on November 17, 1970. The mouse is the most popular point and draw device. Mouse is a small hand held device which can comfortably fit in a user palm. It rolls on a small bearing and has one or more buttons on the top. The graphic cursor which is used to point and draw is displayed on the screen as a variety of symbol such as an arrow.   A wrist with a pointing finger  etc.

Trackball:

A trackball is a pointing mechanical mouse.  The ball that is placed in the base of a mechanical mouse is placed on the top along with the buttons.  In case of a track ball the ball is rolled with the fingers to move the graphic cursor around the screen. Some people find it helpful to think of a trackball as an upside-down mouse.
